Spiral, Waulk

Artist: Ben Rousseau
Medium: LED Light sculpture
Client: Urban Splash
Location: Waulk Mill, Manchester

Spiral is a 15-metre-long, fully programmable light installation at Waulk Mill in Manchester, created by the award-winning artist Ben Rousseau.

The Grade II* Listed Waulk Mill was originally transformed by Urban Splash in the early 2000s, earning a prestigious RIBA Award for Architecture. The space now houses contemporary offices, each with original Victorian features.

Urban Splash tasked us with finding an artist that could create a unique lighting installation to draw attention to the enormous height within the Waulk Mill entrance. They wanted us to create something with wow-factor; highlighting the building’s unique architecture and providing a special experience for its tenants and visitors. Having commissioned Ben Rousseau on many projects, we knew he was the perfect fit, as he’s a master of light and sculpture.

Ben was instantly inspired by the scope of the space at Waulk Mill, and wanted to pay homage to the spiral staircase within the building.

“Given the amazing height it felt like a natural choice to create something overhead, while the existing spiral staircase carries such a good energy that I knew it had to feature.” Ben Rousseau, artist

With Spiral, Ben managed to create something that is equally impressive, no matter the angle you view it from. Fully programable, the colours can alternate and change in colour and frequency – providing a constantly evolving experience.
