DUAL

Artist: Giles Miller Studio

Building: Warwick Court, Paternoster Square, London

Client; Stanhope / Mitsubishi Estates rtist: Paul Cocksedge

Warwick Court is a stunning refurbishment of an 180,000 sq ft building, sitting proudly on Paternoster Square. With elegant Portland stone surrounds, and the iconic St Paul’s Cathedral just opposite, Warwick Court’s reception space was deserving of a jewel in its crown…

“Dual is a structural and material balancing act.”

Twin sculptures hang either side of an entranceway, both visible through and from on another, viewers can watch the tonal density of the pieces change as they walk past each of the opposing structures.

Consisting of a grid of 3-dimensional rods held together by ‘penny-junctions’, the forms manifest as two diamond shaped ‘jewels’ (with which the name plays) with a subtle variation in their top and bottom halves generated by the directional composition of their junctions.

Dual is part of Giles Miller’s ongoing experimental Plexus series of sculptural work; a compositional form of artwork which has spawned miniature framed pieces as well as architectural pavilions alike. The piece was commissioned by Zoë Allen of Artistic Statements on behalf of the Mitsubishi Group.

“Zoë/Artistic Statements commissioned our studio to create two large-scale sculptures to be positioned either side of a main entrance at Warwick Court. She presented our studio's work to the client and from that point was able to bridge the gap between the clients expectations of value in their new space and the creative process that would inevitably bring that value to fruition. From briefing our studio to the characteristics of the client and the building itself, through to assisting us with the delivery of the final sculptures Zoë was able to execute a seamless delivery of the project for both the client as well as ourselves, the artists.”
